Overnight Emergency Shelter Exercise for People with Disabilities & Access/Functional Needs

Wonder how it would be to spend the night in an emergency shelter during a major storm? If you or your loved one have a disability or access and functional needs and would like to help improve emergency sheltering plans in Hampton Roads, join the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) for preparedness information, a preparedness token of appreciation, socializing and maybe even a little fun, at a camp out at an emergency shelter overnight. Meals and snacks will be provided. Transportation to and from the exercise is the responsibility of the participants.

Shelter Exercise Date: June 29-30, 2018

Start Time: 4 p.m. (Friday, June 29)

End Time: 10 a.m. (Saturday, June 30)

Where: George P. Phenix School, (accessible to all)
1061 Big Bethel Rd. Hampton, VA 23666

What to Bring:

  • A sense of adventure,
  • Your personal attendant or caregiver (if you need one, you must bring yours to participate),
  • Your ADA compliant service animal (if you have one),
  • Medications,
  • Necessary equipment,
  • Personal hygiene items,
  • Sleeping bag or blanket and pillow (cots will be provided),
  • Special snacks or food (if you have food allergies), and
  • Any comfort or entertainment items you might want to use while camping overnight in an emergency shelter.

Emergency shelter staff will be learning with you as you register for the event and shelter overnight. HRPDC will provide information on how to best be prepared for disasters in our area. HRPDC also needs your help and wants to discuss the best ways to assist with your basic needs and listen to your feedback on how to improve your shelter stay experience! HRPDC values your input on lessons learned for sheltering our community during an emergency.

For more information about the exercise, contact Jenny Redick at 757-420-8300 or jredick@hrpdcva.gov.
