Phases and Goals of Treatment
- Induction – Your initial meeting with the clinic with the goal of finding your appropriate dose of suboxone that reduces cravings for other opiates and removes withdrawal symptoms. The worse you feel when you begin suboxone treatment, the better it will make you feel and the more satisfied you will be with the whole experience.
- Stabilization – Finding a suitable dose of suboxone so that you no longer crave opiates and are able to resume a healthy lifestyle.
- Maintenance – Remaining on the appropriate dose until you have developed a strong enough recovery to begin tapering off.
- Tapering – Slowly withdrawing from suboxone at a rate that you can safely tolerate.
Scheduling an Induction
Most inductions will be scheduled in the morning on a Monday or Tuesday.
Please Note: No medication is stored on site. You will need to drive to a nearby pharmacy to pick up the medication, so you may want to bring a support person such as a friend or family member to drive you.
Induction Appointment
On the day of your induction appointment, please arrive with mild to moderate opioid withdrawal symptoms. It should be at least 12 hours since you last used heroin or pain pills (e.g. short-acting Oxycodone, Morphine, Vicodin, Codeine, Hydromorphone, Oxymorphone, Hydrocodone) and at least 24 hours since you used methadone or other longer-acting drugs (e.g. long-acting Oxycontin, Morphine, Oxymorphone, and Fentanyl).
You should have at least 3 of the following feelings:
- Twitching, tremors, or shaking
- Joint and bone aches
- Bad chills or sweating
- Anxious or irritable
- Goose pimples
- Very restless, can’t sit still
- Heavy yawning
- Enlarged pupils
- Runny nose, tears in eyes
- Cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Please arrive with a full bladder for a urine drug screen. Bring ALL of your medication bottles.
Check-In
- Check in with support staff to confirm your insurance.
- After check in, you will meet with a Registered Nurse for your initial evaluation before meeting with your doctor for the induction.
Induction
- You will place your Buprenorphine film under your tongue and keep it there until dissolved. If you swallow, the film will not work. It takes 20-45 minutes for the medication to be absorbed and have an effect.
- After each dose, the nurse will visually inspect your mouth to ensure that the film has been fully dissolved.
- If you have a mobile phone and have never taken Buprenorphine, you may want to download the app “Mobile Health Library” and open it with the password “sub.” This will demonstrate how to take it.
Follow-up Appointments
- CBH strongly believes in the importance of counseling and care coordination services to make this program a success. If you are new to CBH, we will schedule you for an intake appointment within 7 days of your induction. If you are already receiving services with CBH, we will schedule you an appointment with a counselor within 7 days of your induction.
- Care Coordination and Peer Support services will also be available to you.
